For those of us in the SEO world who have clients who typically respond with “I don’t care about Yahoo” when we provide their end of month reports – it may be time to rethink that response – and quick.
It was announced last month that Firefox would be releasing their next update, Firefox 34 with Yahoo as their default search engine. This is a HUGE opportunity for Yahoo but can leave many online businesses baffled when some organic traffic disappears! Although many felt that most people would quickly change that default search engine back to Google, the stats are showing differently.
Statcounter is a popular statistics tool that you can use to monitor your traffic- but they have something called StatCounter Global Stats which are based on their own internal data collection. The release of the information regarding the Yahoo/Firefox release is very interesting!
They released that based on their tracking data, Yahoo search was used 3 times more on Firefox 34 (where it is the default search engine) versus Firefox 33 (which has Google as the default search engine).
[box type=”info”]The estimated usage for Yahoo prior to their becoming a default search engine was approximately 9% – it jumped to about 29% with the release of Firefox 34.That is pretty impressive![/box]
Google dropped from approximately 82% to 63% with the upgrade to Firefox 34.
This means people are not changing the default search engine as much as we had expected they would. Again, these results only apply to Firefox – Google is still the dominant search engine in other browsers, but another important note is that Firefox 34 is brand new! It is still being rolled out so the numbers are reflective of just a small amount of those who have done the upgrade.
It seems pretty reasonable to believe that Yahoo will gain quite a generous share of the search market with this change!
Overall Statistics for search based on Statcounters data shows Google with 78% of the market, Bing with 12% and Yahoo with almost 8%. It will be interesting to see where this goes as more people download Firefox 34!
