Welcome back to the SEO Challenge! If you missed the last post announcing the launch of our challenge, click here to catch up!
First I want to preface by saying – there are probably so many different ways to do things when it comes to online marketing strategies. The SEO Challenge is about what I have done and still do and how my process works – allowing you to see the end result. I have been doing SEO for just about 10 years now and have had some great success. Local SEO is still a new thing – and it is a work in progress for me, but so far so good!
For those who question my methods or processes – it is OK, just please be nice about it and let me have the opportunity to flourish or fail! Join me in the journey and let’s see where I wind up! 🙂
So this week I will just quickly cover how I came up with my LOCAL KEYWORDS – I will do another post early next week about my organic keywords. Yes, I do 2 different processes for these!
We will be using the Google Keyword Planner for this part of the challenge – you will need a Google Account to use this tool, so make sure you are logged in.
KEYWORD RESEARCH STEP 1
After you log into the Keyword Planner your should see a screen that looks like the one below – simple click on the option that the big orange arrow points to.
KEYWORD RESEARCH STEP 2
Then you will be shown the screen below. Here you will enter a few search terms that you think your perfect customer would use to find you in the LIST 1 box and your locations in LIST 2.
For my challenge I used the following terms: web design, zencart, wordpress, seo
For the locations in LIST 2 I used the state I reside in both in full and abbreviated format as well as a few towns that I know have a lot of businesses that may need my services – just to see if it is worth optimizing for those as well.
Remember – I am doing minimal research for the sake of this challenge to keep things easy to understand. But I would spend a lot more time adding in more cities and areas!
When you are done – click the GET SEARCH VOLUME button.
KEYWORD RESEARCH STEP 3
Below you will see the results page that you will get after clicking Get Search Volume. The first image below shows the results as entered above. You can see one of my terms “web design nj” gets an average of about 590 searches a month – that is why it is on my list. Clearly my cities were a bust and I won’t waste my time!
But then I did the EXACT same search I just reversed what was in LIST 1 with what was in LIST 2. – that is seen on the second image below.
[icon name=”icon-question-sign”]Why? Because some people might use “nj seo” while others will use “seo nj” – by reversing the data you are opening yourself up for more options for optimization.
As you can see those 2 terms do get a different search volume – but I chose “NJ SEO” because the search volume was just a bit higher. I will ultimately optimize for both. But I won’t address that just yet!
You can see that these terms are all VERY competitive as seen the competition column – it will be hard to rank, but I think in time I can do it! Gotta’ think positive right?
So this is my process for finding local keywords! Once you get into the Keyword Planner, you should explore – A LOT! Early next week I will post about ORGANIC SEARCH opportunities so you have both options available depending on your specific niche.
Would love to know what you think and I will try to help how I can so feel free to leave comments and questions!
I will be adding new posts for this challenge throughout the week – Fridays will be reserved going forward just for evaluation of my site, rank status as well as traffic. There is a lot I want to cover and one post a week won’t do it!
This week I did not have any rank changes worth noting from my last post, so there is no new data to share just yet!
Thanks for joining me and I hope over the next few weeks you will learn a LOT that will help you!
