This post is a full review/beginner’s guide to help you better understand what the Rank Tracker is and does and why it is a tool ever business owner should invest in.
This tool is for EVERYONE – not just SEO or web agencies.
We should all be doing keyword research.
We should all be tracking those keywords to see how we are doing.
We should understand the competition that is ranking for those keywords.
What is Rank Tracker?
Rank Tracker is a powerhouse of a keyword rank checker tool that can show you where you rank for the keywords you care about most.
You can track your position in a variety of search engines and can focus on mobile or desktop or both.
The options are almost limitless!
Not only that – but you can find new keyword ideas, use it for generating content inspiration and so much more. Let’s take a peak at all the goodies that come with this powerhouse of a keyword rank tracker.
Our History With Rank Tracker
We have been using the whole SEO PowerSuite program for many years – I would guess about 5 or 6. We have seen them grow and improve over the years – these guys really put their heart and souls into this project.
I have to admit when I first started using it- it was a love hate relationship because the software was bulky and slow – I wanted to love it, but never really fell head over heels because of the slowness issue.
But about 2 years ago – I noticed a big improvement in speed and delivery of the data and that was it – we now use Rank Tracker and Website Auditor just about daily to monitor client websites as well as our own!
Installing Rank Tracker
Installing Rank Tracker is as easy as downloading it from the SEO PowerSuite website and installing the program on your desktop. It is available for both PC and MAC – and there is a free version available so if you have a small website then having the free version might be all you need if you are looking for a 1 time check of your website.
When you download the tool you will receive all 4 parts of it including the Website Auditor, Link Assistant, Rank Tracker and SEO Spyglass.
Once you have it installed on your desktop you just click the Rank Tracker icon and the tool will open.
Now, because this is a review and not really a how to article – we won’t delve too much into the settings at this time, but if you need help the website has a great tutorial section and even a forum for clients.
The Problem With Rank Tracker
As with everything in life, there is a downside to this keyword tracking tool…
…it offers too many options.
OK – so it is a GOOD problem – but still a problem for most basic users of the tool.
Once you install it you will need to review the Preferences it has so you can set it to do what you want it to. This is a FANTASTIC thing for developers and coders, but for business owners or nonprofit organizations it may be quite overwhelming.
Below is a screenshot of the Preferences dialog box (with the Global Preferences section closed) – you access this through the Preferences link you see at the top of the page.
We also are showing a dropdown from that menu item so you can see all of the different options you have available to you. This is the part of setting up Rank Tracker you may need a little help with to make sure you get the most out of the tool!

So let’s get this review started so you can see how Rank Tracker is an amazing and affordable option!
Keyword Tracking
Keyword tracking is where this tool shines! There are a lot of rank tracking tools out there but they are usually expensive and are a monthly based fee. Rank Tracker is just a few dollars a month and you can track as many keywords as you want and check your rankings whenever you want.
Below is the rank tracker screen from my own account – I just blacked out the keywords! This screen is showing my overall keyword status – so every keywords I am tracking I can see all the pertinent details I want.

But what makes the keyword tracking area really powerful is the ability to create CUSTOM screens so you can get the data that matters the most to you. In the above screenshot you can see all the columns that I have — but those can be completely customized.
For example in the screenshot below – I have only included columns that focus on Google Analytics & Google Search Console. So I can see for each term how many impressions, clicks etc.
I am getting to my website for that specific keyword.
In the red circle you can see some tabs — I have 3 reports currently and each report is different. This just shows the flexibility of the rank tracking tool to meet your unique needs.

The variety of items you can add to your reports will give you more than enough data to help you make informed decisions about how to improve your rank in the search engines.

Rank Tracker Historical Data
This is not available in the free version of the tool – which is why I do recommend the Pro version! The ability to see where you have been over a period of time as well as the competition can help you immensely in your efforts!
When I highlight a keyword the bottom of the tool as a lot of extra features to help you see more important rank information.
Below is a the SERP analysis which shows a historical view of who is ranking where and what type of search results exist. There is also different ways to view this information as well.

Keyword Map
This part of the tool is critical to helping you organize your keywords! I have mine broken into groups and then use tags to further refine my ability to find the data I need.

Keyword Research
This part of the website will help you find keyword opportunities and there are too many parts of this section to cover each and every one, but below is a bit about what each one does.
Ranking Keywords – allows you to find keywords a website is ranking for
Keyword Gap – find keywords a competitor is ranking for but you are not
Search Console – collect the keywords you rank for from Search Console or Google Analytics
Keyword Planner – keyword ideas from Keyword planner
Autocomplete Tools – find keyword ideas from a variety of sources
Related Searches – related keywords to your input keyword that commonly show in the SERPS as related terms

TF-IDF Explorer – allows you to find topic related keywords that are used most often by your competitors
Keyword Combinations – enter a keyword and play around with the options find other keyword opportunities
Keyword Sandbox – where all of your keyword research from above lands – this page has all the keywords in this one location so you can further refine your research

Competitor Research
This part of the tool does what it says – allows you to research your competitors to see what they are up to.
There are 3 sections in this part of the tool, so let’s cover those real quick!
Domain Competitors
Find the websites that are your most related competitors in terms of the keywords you rank for. Below we input Backlinko and you can see some of their top competitors and level of intersection they have with keywords.

Topic Competitors
Find out who you biggest competitors are for a specific topic. In the example below I entered “seo audit” just to see what pops up and you can see the list of pages that are competing for that term which will help me see if I can compete with the term.
The results show a variety of metrics to help me understand the competitiveness of the term to see if it makes sense for me to try and optimize for it and if I can – who I need to review to see how to beat them!

Top Pages
Find out the top pages for your competitors! As a test I entered Backlinko to see what his top pages are and below is the result of that search. You can see an estimate for their organic traffic, keywords ranking for each page, top keyword and more.

Rank Tracker Video
Because not everyone likes reading – we created an overview video to help you get a real live view of the Rank Tracker software and the many options and features it has.
