It is getting harder – and harder —– and harder to get traffic to our websites. Writing great content that is keyword optimized and engaging is only a small part of the overall strategy for your blog that you should be focusing on.
Once you are done with the post is where the hard work should really begin. Think about your after post strategy – does it contain things like sharing on Facebook, scheduling it on Twitter for a few times – and maybe a pin to Pinterest?
Those are all good – but with social visibility shrinking you have to think outside the box and find new avenues to not only bring you new fresh visitors – but to also build those backlinks.
Whether you are a blogger or a nonprofit organization – blogging is critical to success but sadly we see most do not do enough post promotion. Blog posts can bring traffic to help you engage new supporters and donors or if you are a blogger to bring in new members to your community – but only if they see your content.
BUT MY SOCIAL STRATEGY IS ALREADY WORKING
We hear this every so often and it kind of makes us sad. If you are writing posts and getting social traction that makes you happy then great, but if you have the mind frame that you are “doing enough” – you will never grow – it does not matter what business you are in – there is ALWAYS room for improvement.
Amazon, Ebay, Wayfair, St. Jude, Salvation Army, ProBlogger — these are all groups in different markets, do you think ANY of them say “it is already working”.
Of course not, they are testing and innovating every day to see how they can grow their user/customer/supporter bases – and you should to!
WHY YOU SHOULD THINK ABOUT BACKLINKS
Recently we have done several audits of both nonprofit and blogger websites and one area we consistently see issues is in backlink profiles for the websites.
Backlinks are the sites that link to YOUR website.
Backlinks are still and probably will be a for a long time – a key indicator in your SEO success. If you are not actively pursuing backlinks to your website, then you are failing your blog.
While many bloggers take part in Linky type blogs and support each other in their communities by actively posting and commenting it is not enough.
It is important that you get links from “authoritative” websites!
If your backlinks are only from your peers or other blogs that are low in authority – it won’t hurt you, but it is less of an impact on improving your rank.
For every post you write you should try and determine how you can get strong backlinks to it!
But we know it is not always that easy – so some of the below tactics can help you reach new audiences!
CREATIVE WAYS TO INCREASE BLOG POST VISIBILITY
1) Content Syndication
Content syndication will get your post out to people who are reading content on related posts. There is a cost involved for syndication, but it can be worth it for the new potentially relevant traffic it can bring.
Popular syndication programs are:
There are many others out there, so if you decide to proceed with this avenue it is important to do your due diligence to find the right program for your niche and market.
2) Q&A FORUMS
Question and Answer forums are a great way for you to get your content to a new audience for free – as well as a great way to source new content ideas! It takes a little work, but the effort can pay off greatly if you put in the time. Allocating even 2 hours a week to research and posting on these sites can really increase your visibility and give you an authoritative advantage in your niche.
Popular Q&A forums include:
Getting links from these websites offer great value for SEO and for visibility.
What is IMPORTANT to note about these websites is that they are NOT meant to be self promotional. It is important to add value without being self-promotional. So spending a few minutes each week posting on others posts is a good way to build a reputation. Then when you CAN help someone else with your content, then of course you should jump in.
3) DIFFERENT MEDIUMS
A popular, but underutilized method of promoting a post is putting it into other mediums to be able to share it on other websites, below are some popular options.
Infographic – look at your post and see if it can be turned into an infographic then you can share it to a few online infographic websites and hit up other relevant blogs to see if they would be interested in sharing it. Infographics are also great for Pinterest!
Slide Deck – a popular website is Slideshare, by turning your post into an easy to read slide and posting it there you can open up your website to new visitors. There are a few other websites as well like slideworld.com and scribd.com where you can also post the slides.
Video Infographics – because video is growing by leaps and bounds, turning your post into a vide graphic will then give you the ability to post to places like Youtube, Vimeo and even Facebook Video. You can use a tool like Animaker to help you create one of these.
Podcasts – hire someone to read your content and turn it into a podcast. Podcasts are so incredibly popular and with the world being so busy – having this as an option can increase your community. There are several great podcast databases where you can upload your content.
So this is just a small list of creative ways to not only increase visibility – but to also get new backlinks from high authority websites! Have you tried any of these and seen success in growing your community?
